Greater Miami Convention and Visitor's Bureau

I recently had the opportunity to roam around the website for the Greater Miami Convention and Visitor's Bureau.  They have a lot of useful and informative information about Miami and vacation planning in the area.

They offer planning guides, lists of attractions, travel advisors, restaurants, spas and golf course, etc.  They even have apps with local information.

This may be a good resource in addition to this blog, of course, for information about Miami and the beaches.

I hope you find everything you are looking for and hope you have a terrific vacation!

Come back and post your comments.  Let us know what you like to do while
in South Florida on vacation.

La Goulue French Restaurant in Bal Harbour, FL

After a quick visit to our condo to put in a new television set, my husband and I went to Bal Harbour for lunch. We decided on a small French restaurant, La Goulue.

The décor is very French, similar to any casual restaurant in France. They have an outdoor dining area, however, the weather was a bit wet, so we opted for the dining room.

We decided to order light. We each ordered an onion soup and we ordered an omelette du jour which consisted of smoked salmon, spinach and cheese.

After watching several orders go by, we couldn’t resist any more and ordered a side of straw waffle potatoes. We also ordered the raspberry iced tea.

The meal was enjoyable; however, I could have done without the tea. The ambiance was okay, however the restaurant was bustling with activity.

It’s a nice place to go after shopping or running errands around town.

Yardhouse Restaurant in Coral Gables

One of our favorite casual restaurants is Yardhouse.
Located at: 320 San Lorenzo Avenue.  Coral Gables, FL 33146, 305-447-9273.

The decor is very attractive done in contemporary chic.  They have a huge bar and multiple seating areas as well as an outdoor covered terrace overlooking beautiful Merrick Park.

There is a new location in Hallandale Beach.  601 Silks Run Hallandale Beach, FL 33009
954-454-9950
We haven't been to this location, but I'm sure it will be as enjoyable as the other.

They have something for everyone and they have tv screens throughout, so you can watch your favorite teams play.

Some of our favorite dishes are:
Ahi Poke Bowl
Tuna Roll
Sliders (regular or Bearnaise)
Adult Mac and Cheese
Korean Sweet Ribs

Sugarcane Restaurant in Midtown Miami

Last night we dined at trendy Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill.  It is located in the up and coming area known as Midtown Miami.  It has been open since February of this year.  The location is just a short 15 minute drive from most areas of the city and the beach.
The menu consists of a variety of international "tapas" that are meant to be shared by your party.  The atmosphere is pleasant and welcoming.  Guests are encouraged to relax, try the many delicious tapas or beers on tap and have a great time.
Our server was informative and hospitable.  One of the owners and the general manager came by our table to welcome us and ensure our meal was enjoyable.
We had a wonderful evening, reveling in the company of good friends with savory selections from the extensive choices on the menu, and just experiencing the ambiance and the city.  The meal lasted about 4 hours.  We were not rushed, rather encouraged to stay as long as we wanted to eat, drink and be merry.

We ordered several tapas and each one was better than the last.  Some of the items we ordered were:
wedge salad
veal meatballs
duck and waffles
bacon wrapped dates

goat cheese croquettes / membrillo marmalade
housemade chorizo / garbanzo bean purée / red grapes
brussels sprouts / orange / sweet soy
kobe beef slider / tonkatsu / quail egg
skirt steak / chimichurri
sweet potatoes / maple soy
crunchy tuna sushi roll

Gator Park in theFlorida Everglades

Visit Gator Park in the Florida Everglades and enjoy Florida's native wildlife up close!

Take a ride on an airboat and experience a unique and fun-filled afternoon.  Among the many animals you might see are:
turtles, alligaors, snakes, fish, and many exotic birds.

 IMAG1011.jpgIMAG0955.jpgIMAG0958.jpg

On a recent family-outing we had a wonderful time at Gator Park. Although we've been there before, the guide showed us something we'd never seen...2.5 week old alligators (they look like salamanders). They are so adorable! The guide mentioned that the fall is the best time of the year to see newborn animals. If you'd like to see the babies for yourself, visit Gator Park during the months of September and October.

IMAG0988.jpgIMAG0987.jpgIMAG0979.jpg

Even though the airboat ride is a treat in itself, they also have a short wildlife show.  During the show you see 3 year-old alligators, a skunk and others.  You also learn the differences between crocodiles and alligators and tortoises and turtles.
For a few dollars per person, you can also take a photograph holding a young alligator.  It's a fun, exciting place for little ones and adults alike.

Enjoy your visit!!!

South Florida Summer Deals

For South Floridians wanting a vacation, there's no place like home.

As the summer travel season draws to a close, South Florida hotels and restaurants are targeting locals with specials.
Deals abound all over South Florida:
• A five-day stretch of shopping discounts in downtown Coral Gables kicks off Monday.
• Miami Spice lures foodies until the end of September with three-course lunches for $22 and dinners for $35.
• Miami Spa Month offers deals on pampering through the end of August, and a Broward version, Lauderdale Spa Chic, started Sunday and lasts until Sept. 30.

MAKING A DEAL

In an April 2010 travelhorizons survey by travel research firm Ypartnership and the U.S. Travel Association, 9 percent of U.S. adults said they planned to take a staycation between May and October because they couldn't afford to travel. In the same survey, 8 percent of adults said they had taken a home-based vacation instead of a previously planned out-of-town trip in the prior six months.

That's down from the previous July, when 14 percent of U.S. adults had staycationed in the previous six months rather than going away.

About 75 percent of this summer's business has been from within Florida, Roth said.

Fun in the Sun

It's been years since we spent so much time in our condo in Miami Beach as this summer.  Usually my children have so many social obligations and extracurricular activities that we can hardly spend any time there.  This summer we made it a point to stay at the beach and enjoy our condo as much as possible.  We've had a wonderful time!

We were able to do minor updates and renovations which will prove beneficial and convenient to all who use the space.  We've also had so much fun and enjoyed each other's company tremendously.    Some friends have come over to spend time with us and enjoy the beach, but mostly we enjoyed spending time together.  We wake up leisurely in the morning, have breakfast and make beds, etc.  Then we pack up our "Wonder Wheeler" with towel, coolers, boogie boards, and anything else we might need that day and head to the beach.  On the weekends, when family and/or friends come over, we take the 12 x 12 pop up canopy and set it up with all the comforts of home.  The only thing we are missing is a bathroom and a/c.  During the week,  there are plenty of umbrellas to go around so we grab some beach chairs and an umbrella or two, and lay by the ocean to read.  That is one of my favorite things.  The children read for awhile and then go in the ocean to swim, play catch, ride waves on boogie boards, catch fish with their nets, or anything else they can think of.

We stay out for hours.  We take lunch, snacks, and plenty of water.   We go back to the condo around 5 p.m. for a little bit, we have dinner and then we go back for our evening walk and kickball or soccer game on the beach.

Since the sun sets so late we stay out for 1 to 2 hours.  Afterwards we head back, take showers and then spend the evening playing board games.

As simple as this vacation has been, I'm sure we will remember this summer fondly.  I look forward to many more summers of enjoying the beach and our condo with my family.

  • purchased a full-size sofa bed for the master bedroom

  • purchased new stainless steel appliances
  • changed lighting in the kitchen
  • purchased new, contemporary dining table with chairs for kitchen
  • made room in the kitchen pantry to provide more space for guests' items

  • have provided WIFI in addition to the original DSL connection, for added convenience

  • purchased a desk and chair for 2nd bedroom, and a computer table for master bedroom

  • painted the unit with neutral, light colors

  • purchased a new, rectangular dining table that will seat 6-8 for the dining room

Another beautiful day in Miami Beach

What a beautiful, sunny day here in Miami Beach.  The water is warm and there are sandbars throughout, which are great for the children.  Usually, the water is tranquil and good for lounging, however,  today its a bit rough.  There are quite a few waves, so the surf boards and boogie boards are out for added entertainment.

A sight to be seen and enjoyed!!!!!!

Fourth of July

Hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July.  My family and I spent the weekend in Key Biscayne with friends.  We enjoyed the annual parade, and spent most of the weekend celebrating and relaxing.

Thanks to all who came before us who made this holiday possible.

We sat on the beach in the dark and watched the fireworks that were set off from a barge just feet away on the ocean, while singing patriotic songs.

The evening made a pleasant impression on me.  Even though my favorite beach is Miami Beach, I hope to make a tradition of attending the fireworks display on Key Biscayne for years to come.

Shake it up on Lincoln Road

We discovered a new restaurant on Lincoln Road...Shake Shack.

I think they've only been open one week and we've dined there twice.  My family loves it.  The menu is not extensive, it basically consists of burgers, hot dogs, fries, shakes, desserts and drinks.
The burgers, hands down, are the best we've ever had.  My 6 year old daughter described them as "amazing".  The burgers are extremely fresh and light.  The fries are not great, but okay.  I have not tasted the shakes but I hear from my family that they are delicious.  It's a bit pricey.  We paid $42.00 for 4 burgers, 3 fries and 3 small shakes.   However, worth the experience.  For more information, visit their website:  http://www.shakeshack.com/

Our condo has been undergoing a small transformation.  I have posted some new photos on the website and will be blogging about the remodeling experience in future posts.  Remember to visit our condo site:

Dining Al Fresco on Lincoln Road

South Beach is such a vibrant place...  its wonderful to just hang out on Lincoln Road.  There is something for everyone, and you are sure to have a great time.  Friday evening we dined al fresco at Tiramesu, 721 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139.
**
We were a party of 20 which included 8 children.  The service was good, the meal was delicious, the ambiance was pleasant and the prices were extremely reasonable.

I ordered a glass of the Malbec wine by the glass and it was nice but too warm to drink with the temperature outside, the following drink was a Lemondrop and that was prepared well.  My friends were all satisfied with their choices although the drinks took awhile to arrive.  We ordered the second round soon after the first  to allow for the second drinks to arrive more promptly.

There are 3 menus to order from.  They have the regular menu, the menu with specials and the Prix Fixe menu.

Although the Prix Fixe menu was very appealing, I opted for the Sea Bass from the regular menu (fresh imported Mediterranean seabass fillet stuffed with crab meat, potatoes and artichokes in a white truffle flavored Chardonnay wine sauce).
I also had the Della Casa mixed greens side salad (mixed greens, cherry tomatoes and fennel tossed with Maldon sea salt and Lake Garda EVOO) and several "tastes" of my husband's Melanzane al Caprino (Fried Eggplant layered with goat cheese served with an apple vinaigrette) and Linguine Carbonara (Housemade Linguine tossed with pancetta, egg, cream and Parmesan cheese).

Although not the healthiest entree, my husband and I thought the Linguine Carbonara was exceptional.  My friends were pleased with their meals as well.

The meal was enjoyable, well -priced, and the service was good.  All in all it was a good experience and I'd recommend dining there.

Drop in and experience it for yourself or visit their website for more information at: http://www.tiramesu.com/

Today was a "red flag" day...written Friday, June 25th, 2010

Todd Taubman

Today was a red flag day in mid-Miami Beach.  Florida has a warning flag system.   The purpose is to allow all of us to enjoy the beaches while helping us be aware of potential dangers in the ocean.

The warning program uses flags in four colors along with signs to explain the meaning of each color:

Green: Low hazard, calm conditions, exercise caution.

Yellow: Medium hazard, moderate surf and/or currents.

Red: High hazard, high surf and/or strong currents.

Red over Red (2 flags, one on top of the other): Water closed to the public.  The lower red flag in the "red-over-red" illustration shows a no swimming logo in white.

Purple: Dangerous marine life."

For additional information, please visit:
http://www.dep.state.fl.us/cmp/programs/flags.htm

Hope there are many "green flag" days on your vacation.

Visit Miami Beach

Miami Beach with its fabulous people, fabulous beaches, fabulous shopping and fabulous restaurants is a great place to spend your vacation.

The Atlantic Ocean has warm, clear waters and it’s a wonderful place to swim, take on water sports, or participate in numerous enjoyable activities. There is plenty to do for people of all ages and activity levels.

The beach is perfect for flying a kite as the sun is setting, picking up a game of beach volleyball, football,  badminton, boogie-boarding or wake boarding, snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing, kayaking, swimming or sun-bathing (with appropriate sun protection of course).

Another enjoyable activity for children of all ages is fishing with a hand-held net. You’d be surprised at the amazing little creatures you pick up in your net.

From South Beach to Mid Beach we have a tree-lined boardwalk which offers the possibility of walking, running, biking or rollerblading while still taking in the sites, literally surrounded by the ocean and trendy hotels and restaurants as you move along the boardwalk.

Visit our fabulous city and enjoy all it has to offer.

Dolores, but you can call me Lolita

This beautiful restaurant offers a "true" Miami experience.  The building was once Miami’s Fire Station No. 4, and was built in the Mediterranean Revival style.  The restaurant is elegant and provides great ambiance.  It is located across the street form the Mary Brickell Village shops.
The building offers multiple areas to enjoy, like the delightful rooftop dining terrace with couches and a beautiful view of the city.  The indoor dining area is decorated in white and features beautiful floral arrangements and graceful lighting.

We dined in the garden dining room on the first floor. The decor was chic and we found the restaurant to be charming.

The meals are superb (at least the ones I've tasted).  I had the eggplant with smoked mozzarella for my appetizer( appetizers are included with the price of the entrees).   The appetizer was delicious!  I was stuffed by the time the entree came, I ate a little and brought the leftovers to my son.  We both enjoyed it very much.  I had the pan seared Chilean Sea Bass with the seafood ragout.  My husband ordered the shrimp and mahi-mahi scampi with pasta and enjoyed it immensely.

Our experience was delightful and was made better by the fact that dinner was priced very well.

Go by and come back and share your comments on the experience.
